Flicking the Switch – meet Francis from TriCorp

Thursday, May 26th, 2016 by Tricycle

That’s right, you heard correctly – Tricycle Young Company are back! Following a sell-out run earlier in the year as part of Takeover 2016: Paradise, Switch is making a triumphant return to the Tricycle. So if you missed out on you chance to ‘flick the switch’ back in March, get on it and book now.

Tricycle Young Company have been working hard to develop and re-vamp the show ready for four performances on 19th and 26th June. In the first of our flicking the switch blog series, we meet Young Company member Nicholas Marrast-Lewis who talks to Heather Agyepong about working for the mysterious TriCorp company…

This is also the LAST Young Company performance in the theatre before we close for an exciting period of renovations – read more about our Capital Project here.

Switch is an immersive theatre experience that takes place across the whole of the Tricycle building. To book, click here.

Blog Takeover: Would YOU flick the switch?

Say hello to Nathaniel – if you haven’t met him yet, he’s the fella on the left (under the ladder in this pic!) in the giant Takeover poster on the front of our building! Nathaniel is part of the 19 – 25s Young Company, who for months have been asking themselves the question: Would YOU flick the switch?

From the get go it was almost inevitable that the eldest group would find themselves tackling perhaps a more serious and current issue. Switch swiftly became that. I think what I’ve enjoyed most about this process is witnessing how we as creatives interact and make work. As an actor, it has been really beneficial to be in the room with writers and directors because our creativity is constantly being pushed and a variety of different voices are being heard. This mix has been amazing as it drives the piece forward and really solidifies exactly what we’re trying to say.

The idea behind Switch has always been an interesting one, with such a challenging theme and performance style. We decided to test out our structure with a mock performance on an invited audience of friends and family. We then sat down afterwards and they expressed things which worked for them and things which perhaps weren’t so clear. I found this process extremely helpful as it made the experience of creating and re-creating Switch much clearer and, all in all, condensed our ideas and made them much more grounded.

We have just two weeks left until we open and I couldn’t be more excited. Not only am I curious to see how the audiences will react to the characters we have created but to the topics addressed in our piece and the concept as a whole. Just how far away are we from a ‘Machine’ type service? I think theatre is at its most exciting when it allows you to reflect on your own life and the world around you. Switch will definitely leave you in a state of reflection!

Takeover 2016: Paradise launches THIS SUNDAY 13 March with a HUGE programme of theatre, film, masterclasses and events – it’s not too late to book, or get involved. Click here for the full line up of what’s on offer in Takeover 2016: Paradise, and click here to watch the trailer.
