    Doubt: A Parable

    by John Patrick Shanley

    22 November 2007-12 January 2008

“Gripping…absorbing production richly deserves a West End transfer…” Daily Telegraph

“You’re right there in the debating chamber with them – it’s a great situation. I think that people will be arguing about the play as long as it’s performed.” Matt Wolf, BBC Front Row

“well acted, and skilfully ratchets up the tension…Pádraic Delaney is excellent as Father Flynn” Guardian

“John Patrick Shanley’s thriller pits a fundamentalist nun against a liberal priest and leaves the audience to work out who is telling the truth. Slippery and subtle.” Time Out Critics’ Choice

“The characters burn with conviction.” Sunday Times

“Compelling…this intelligent play is in with a fair chance of a West End transfer.” The Sunday Telegraph

“Nikki Amuka-Bird’s excellent performance” Financial Times

“…well enough acted to deserve a wider audience….Miss Molloy is on fine form.” Daily Mail

“well-acted production…tantalisingly ambiguous ending” The Times

    “Molloy’s excellent performance…” Independent

    “Powerful performances” The London Paper

“beautifully played, with simmering rage and dignity, by Nikki Amuka-Bird…packs an emotional and moral punch.” Whatsonstage.com

“Pádraic Delaney’s charismatic Father Flynn” Official London Theatre Guide

Doubt is set in 1964, the year after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, at a Bronx Catholic School, where a strong-minded nun wrestles with her conscience in the face of concerns about one of the priests.

Sister Aloysius reveals her initial doubts about the enigmatic Father Flynn to Sister James, an inexperienced but enthusiastic young nun. As her suspicions grow about his inappropriate behaviour with the school’s first black student, a verbal battle of wills begins and she instigates a relentless campaign to remove the priest.

Doubt ran for 2 years on Broadway and in 2005 won a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best New Play. John Patrick Shanley also wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for “Moonstruck”.
