    Look Closer

An exhibition in two parts by K Yoland

    Part 1: November 8th – December 11th
    Part 2: December 12th – January 15th

There will be a closing event and drinks reception in the Gallery on January 13th from 6.30pm where the artist will be present to discuss the work.

The Tricycle Gallery presents its first visual arts commission, Look Closer, by the London-based artist K Yoland. Taking place in two halves, the exhibition explores the richness and diversity of Kilburn and the nearby area as expressed through the people and architecture that help define it.

Working with individuals and local community groups, ranging from youth clubs and basketball teams to sea cadets and boxers, K Yoland has created a social study of the area through a personal, artist-led approach. Navigating the grey areas between performance, portraiture and documentary photography, she has created a powerful and engaging series of images that connect to wider dialogues around youth representation and the influence of media, whilst capturing the fundamental essence of life in Kilburn and its neighbourhoods.

The two-part exhibition is hosted by the Tricycle Gallery, with a video presented off-site in a temporary space located at 288 Kilburn High Road. The first part of the exhibition focused on the themes of architecture and place, explored through a series of large-scale panoramic images. Part two looks at notions of identity and the significance of social groups and teams – questioning ideas of intimacy, the relationship between subject and camera and the role of the artist within socially-engaged practice.

K Yoland is a multi-media artist who has exhibited and performed internationally since leaving the Slade School of Fine Art as a post-graduate. Working in video, photography, performance and installation, she has recently been awarded the Acme Southwark Studio Residency for 2010-12.
