A solo exhibition by Natalie Ryde

Inside Out is the second solo show by Tricycle Artist in Residence Natalie Ryde. This collection of drawings and installation considers her conflicting desires to both exhibit and to hide.

The process of making art comes from the mind, from experiences and is often a solitary pursuit behind closed doors, but to be regarded an artist you have to perform. The works displayed in Inside Out conceal and reveal, making the act of hiding the performance.

Having recently seen photographs of her own insides, Natalie was surprised to regard them as foreign, as something other. We know our innards as pulsing, throbbing, aching and assume they are there, below the surface. We also think, and feel emotion, but somehow that is more intangible. Taking the physical body as a visual reference, Natalie aims to give corporeality to this energy, reconstructing the workings of her mind. The plant and body-like motifs are not accurate, they are familiar, we recognise them well enough to relate to them. These constructions act as characters in this game of hide and seek.
