The Tricycle Gallery is pleased to present Natalie Ryde’s first solo exhibition in her role as Tricycle Artist in Residence. In work made during her stay at Tricycle, Ryde explores themes around the residency as a transient site for production and divergence. Whilst her work captures traces from brief encounters, this exhibition acts as a trace of her role as artist in residence.
 
In A Cough to Break the Silence, Ryde displays print, painting and sculpture from her varied practice exploring the idea of the brief encounter and its record. Ryde’s fluid paintings explore fleeting moments capturing the dichotomy between the real and representation. Her subjects flow off the picture plane leaving a naked residue, a trace of the brief interaction between artist and model.
 
With her compact sculpture, Ryde displays the everyday in interaction with space. Using materials such as felt, mirror and scientific apparatus, the sculptures respond to a fascination with the way forms survive and often thrive where not expected. Ryde’s prints also address the way we use space, taking shapes derived from cut outs in her sculptural forms. Screen and block printed multiples flow over the paper, and like her painting, pouring off the edges.
