Thirty-something Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) is at a crossroads in her life. Recently divorced and struggling to hack out the latest book in a young adult fiction series, she drinks too much and has a succession of one night stands. Out of the blue, Mavis gets an email from ex-boyfriend Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson) announcing the birth of his new baby. So the former prom queen packs up her handbag dog and sets off to the small town where she grew up – posing as a huge success and bent on winning him back from his wife (Elizabeth Reaser). Writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman team up again for the first time since the Oscar-winning ‘Juno’ for this daring black comedy. It builds to a cringe-inducing showdown and boasts a terrific performance by Charlize Theron as the monstrous Mavis.
