Soundmix charity screening: Afghan Star – the Power of Pop

With an introduction from the producer, plus live performance by Soundmix musicians.

    Dir. Havana Marking, UK/Afghanistan, 2008.

After 30 years of war and Taliban rule, pop culture has returned to Afghanistan. ‘Afghan Star’, a Pop Idol-style TV series, is searching the country for the next generation of music stars. Even three women come forward. But in this troubled country, music is controversial. Considered sacrilegious by the Mujahiddeen and banned by the Taliban, music has come to symbolise freedom for the youth. This feelgood Œfilm follows the dramatic stories of four contestants as they risk their lives to become the nation’s favourite singer. Havana Marking was voted Best World Cinema Documentary Director at 2009 Sundance Awards.

    Tickets: £10 + £0.90 booking fee

    Soundmix

Soundmix runs music workshops for unaccompanied refugee and asylum seeking children aged 12-17 years old. The children, from countries such as Afghanistan and Iran, are separated from their families. They have often escaped extremely traumatic experiences in their country of origin. We help them adjust to their new circumstances, providing support in a fun, challenging and safe environment. All proceeds from the evening will fund Soundmix music workshops in 2010. All extra donations are greatly appreciated.

Soundmix workshops are currently run under the umbrella of Brixton Community Base, a registered charity, number 1082783. www.bsvcc.org
