Young Tirke, a gifted but poor player, must choose between the stability of a factory job and the chance to play for his country – in a time where only one player in the country gets paid, and that’s on a per-goal basis.

Based on the book by famed sports journalist Vladimir Stankovic, Montevideo follows the transformation of a nation’s football team from something pitied into a symbol of the country’s hope. In doing so, it charts the early days of players who would go on to be genuine national heroes.
